Bringing reality to PCB design

PCB assemblies are three dimensional entities, yet we design them using 2D software. Does this inhibit the design process and what would be the benefits of an ECAD system that actually does support real-time 3D design?

What’s in Altium Designer 6.8

Altium Designer 6.8 brings you innovative new features and capabilities that make electronic product design easier while enhancing productivity, so you can create better, smarter products in less time.

NASA standardizes on Altium Designer

Altium Designer has been selected by NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) as the standard for designing electronics systems for use in both manned and unmanned space missions. These include the Space Shuttle and International Space Station programs, as well as the Constellation program to send astronauts back to the Moon.

IN THE WORKSHOP

  • Manage wiring complexity with Signal Harnesses
Signal harnesses expands on bus and wire connectivity by letting you assemble logical groupings of any signals, greatly simplifying the wiring traffic, enhancing readability, and streamlining the structure of your schematic.
  • OpenBus – streamlining FPGA-based system design
The OpenBus system makes FPGA-based design even simpler by raising design abstraction to the next level. Read how the system represents the processor-peripheral interconnections of a ‘soft’ design in a new and efficient way.
  • 100 complimentary training videos
Altium provides over 100 complimentary short, sharp training videos that will help you understand the key concepts and design functions within Altium Designer.

In a fundamental shift that redefined how products are created, the transition of engineering design from manual drafting-based methodologies to Computer-aided Design has transformed design in virtually all branches of engineering.

The application of CAD in the electronics industry is no exception, and has revolutionized the way engineers work and the products that can be developed. You won’t find too many engineers that would be willing to go back to the old methods.

What you would be going back to is laying out strips of tape and sticking graphics shapes on a flat sheet to create the tracks, footprints and connections that represent the electrical version of the design’s schematic. The birth of ECAD – as in other engineering branches – was essentially the wholesale transfer of that traditional process into the computer software domain. More...

Altium Designer 6.8 is packed with new and updated features that open up future possibilities for all design engineers.

Altium Designer 6.8 introduces a number of ground-breaking new concepts that will allow board-level, embedded and system engineers to stretch their skills in new and innovative ways. With this release Altium Designer again pushes the boundaries of electronic product design.

Altium Designer 6.8 delivers new features and capabilities that make electronic product design easier while enhancing productivity, so you can create better, smarter products in less time. Innovative new features such as 3D Visualization, Signal Harnesses and the OpenBus system help you develop advanced designs easier by making the process more intuitive and ‘abstracting away’ the underlying complexity.

Altium Designer has been selected by NASA’s Johnson Space Center as the standard for designing electronics systems for use in both manned and unmanned space missions.

The Johnson Space Center is embarking on some of the most ambitious space programs of our time, and Altium is delighted that NASA has chosen Altium Designer to help make these visions for space exploration a reality. “We are excited about this new relationship with Altium, and we are looking forward to using this state-of-the-art product to improve our configuration management and reduce our design time cycle." says Matt Lemke, chief of the electronic design and development branch in NASA’s engineering department.
